13.10.2009 Recently we have sent IEHK emergency kits on behalf of our valued partner Medical Teams International, "a Christian global health organisation that empowers communities to live full and healthy lives", who supports the victims of Typhoon Ketsana that hit the northern Philippines on 26 September 2009.
Part of the country experienced the worst flooding in more than four decades, causing many people to die and leaving others still missing. The heavy rainfall swamped entire towns, set off landslides and made entire communities homeless.
The government has declared a "state of calamity" that allows officials to use emergency funds for relief and rescue. Disasters often pose significant health threats to the surviving victims. A very serious concern after a disaster, especially after floods, is the threat of a cholera outbreak. In collaboration with another partner, Imres will be sending multiple cholera kits to the Philippines on October 14th 2009.
